Trapped (1 minute film task)

The film below was used as inspiration

Evaluating the use of micro-elements in your short film

Mise-en-scene

I didn't pay much attention to the mise-en-scene apart from the setting of it being a cupboard like the original video. This is quite effective as it highlights how the girl is trapped in a small space and can't get out any other way, therefore creating tension. Facial expressions were the main element of mise-en-scene used with Olivia looking mischievous as she locks Dani in the room, this forwards the narrative without any dialogue. However, perhaps with more time we could have established a better use of lighting, costume, hair and make-up to make the final product look more polished and sophisticated.

Cinematography

We used some of the same cinematography such as a pan shot, medium shots, and close-up shots. However, we didn't use a tracking shot like in the first video or different angles. To improve our film I might have included different angles to show more of the location.

Editing

The shots in our film were slightly shorter than the original video, and the final product was half the length too. Additionally, we used a continuity shot as Dani goes through the door that's not used in the original video. As we thought this was a better way of starting the film to make it clear that she was going into a cupboard and the camera being behind her implied someone might be following her.

Sound

We didn't use any sound in the end because there was too much background noise and actors laughing. But we did follow not having any dialogue just like the first video. If I had to improve the video I may have added some non-diagetic music just to make the film more enjoyable to watch.

Narrative

The narrative is driven forward by facial expressions, like when Olivia looks suspicious as she locks Dani in the cupboard, and character movement when Dani seems to magically open the door with her hand because she's seen a prop of a whiteboard that tells her to think differently, inspired by the original. Todorov's theory of equilibrium best fits our film: Equilibrium - Dani going in the cupboard for something. Disruption - Olivia locking Dani in the cupboard. Recognition - Dani's facial expression realising shes been locked in the cupboard. Attempt to fix disruption - Dani sees the think differently sign and opens the door magically. New Equilibrium - Dani is out of the cupboard and has new founded powers.
